“Waterfirst!”, chiusa la call for ideas di Seeds&Chips
In palio un premio di 10mila euro dedicato all’Ambasciatore Giorgio Giacomelli, per il suo impegno verso la conservazione e la gestione delle risorse idriche
Milano, 19 gennaio 2018 – Si è conclusa il 15 gennaio la call internazionale WaterFirst!, promossa da Seeds&Chips, The Global Food Innovation Summit, in collaborazione con il Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), l’Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) e UNIDO ITPO Italy, Ufficio in Italia per la Promozione Tecnologica e degli Investimenti dell’Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite per lo Sviluppo Industriale. La competizione a livello globale è stata lanciata per individuare tecnologie ed idee innovative in materia di utilizzo consapevole e sostenibile dell’acqua, la sfida più grande che il mondo si trovi ad affrontare nei prossimi anni.
In due mesi, “WaterFirst!” ha raccolto moltissime adesioni da tutto il mondo: ben 65 progetti sul tema dell’acqua sono stati inoltrati sulla piattaforma di Seeds&Chips, un risultato eccezionale che evidenzia quanto il tema sia sempre più consapevole in ogni parte del mondo, dall’America al Medio Oriente, passando per l’Africa e l’Europa. Risparmio nel consumo di acqua, meno sprechi e minor inquinamento, maggior razionalità nell’utilizzo sono stati alcuni dei cardini guida che hanno ispirato così tanti partecipanti.
La giuria di valutazione, composta dagli importanti advisor scientifici del Summit come IIT, CNR, e UNIDO ITPO Italy, selezionerà e annuncerà entro il 2 febbraio i 30 progetti finalisti, che si aggiudicheranno anche uno spazio espositivo all’interno della prossima edizione del Summit (Milano Congressi, 7-10 maggio 2018). Dei 30 progetti finalisti, 5 si aggiudicheranno un contributo di “ospitalità” per il viaggio e l’alloggio a Milano. Infine, il progetto più votato tra i migliori 5 vincerà un premio di 10.000 Euro.
Un premio speciale intitolato a nome dell’Ambasciatore Giorgio Giacomelli, che sarà assegnato il 10 Maggio nell’ambito del Summit. Giorgio Giacomelli, diplomatico milanese scomparso lo scorso anno, nel corso della sua lunga carriera internazionale ha dedicato particolare attenzione alla conservazione e gestione delle risorse idriche, fino ad essere nominato nel 2006 membro onorario dello UN Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation dall’allora Segretario Generale nelle Nazioni Unite Kofi Annan.
Diana Battaggia, Direttrice UNIDO ITPO Italy ha dichiarato - “Una poesia di Emily Dickinson recita: ‘La sete ci insegna l’acqua…’ Sono quasi 2 miliardi le persone che oggi ne soffrono, e da stime della Banca Mondiale questo numero è destinato a raddoppiare nel 2050. Non è solo un problema che affligge i paesi in via di sviluppo ma tutto il mondo, ed in maniera sempre più preoccupante; in molte metropoli tra cui Città del Messico, Buenos Aires e Barcellona le falde di acqua dolce sono in esaurimento e l’acqua salmastra sta infiltrandosi nel sottosuolo. Resta il fatto che il 97% delle risorse idriche presenti sulla terra sono di acqua salata, abbiamo bisogno di tecnologie a basso costo per dissalarla, tanto per citare un solo esempio relativo alla centralità dell’innovazione per rispondere alla sfida del secolo”.
“Il problema delle risorse è, da sempre, il vero nodo per la produzione in agricoltura. Il suo miglioramento, sia nei paesi avanzati che in quelli in via di sviluppo, non può che sollevare lo sguardo a considerare oggi i vincoli e le opportunità a cui solo le domande sulle risorse del pianeta possono dare risposta”, ha affermato Roberto Reali del CNR-Dipartimento Scienze Bio-Agroalimentari.
“Un’adesione così ampia e diversificata al concorso è una grande soddisfazione” ha commentato Marco Gualtieri, ideatore e Chairman di Seeds&Chips. “È un chiaro segnale che vi è una forte attenzione al tema dell’acqua su scala globale, ma soprattutto che è presente una decisa volontà ad affrontare la sfida mettendo sul campo soluzioni innovative e sostenibili. Siamo orgogliosi di poter premiare le migliori soluzioni e di metterle a sistema affinché esse possano contribuire, in modo efficace, a raggiungere gli obiettivi fissati dai Sustainable Development Goals. Siamo convinti che iniziative come questa, con partner autorevoli come UNIDO, IIT e CNR, siano uno strumento efficace per trovare e supportare soluzioni concrete per affrontare queste grandi sfide. Inoltre, siamo particolarmente onorati di rendere omaggio allo straordinario esempio lasciatoci dall’Ambasciatore Giacomelli”.
“Se guardiamo la distribuzione delle risorse idriche nel mondo ci accorgiamo che dove scarseggia l’acqua esistono poche risorse energetiche e tali mancanze portano a conflitti ed instabilità. Lo studio di tecnologie per il risparmio e l’utilizzo sostenibile dell’acqua deve essere una priorità su scala globale ed è una area di ricerca alla quale anche il nostro Istituto si sta dedicando da tempo”, ha concluso Roberto Cingolani Direttore Scientifico IIT.

“WATERFIRST!”, SEEDS&CHIPS CONCLUDES THE CALL FOR IDEAS
65 projects, 23 countries, 4 continents: impressive numbers reflect a global response to the call for the best solution to the water crisi
The top project will receive a 10.000 euro prize dedicated to Ambassador Giorgio Giacomelli in honor of his work on water conservation and management
Milan, 18 January 2018 – The international call for submissions has concluded for the WaterFirst! Initiative, promoted by Seeds&Chips, The Global Food Innovation Summit, in collaboration with the National Research Council (CNR), The Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), and UNIDO ITPO Italy, the Italian Investment and Technology Promotion Offcies, part of the United Nations Organisation for Industrial Development. The international competition was launched to identify the most innovative technology and ideas to solve the problem of sustainable water management, the most urgent challenge with which the world will be confronted in the near future.
In just two months, “WaterFirst!” received an overwhelming number of applications from around the world, demonstrating both the urgency of the theme and global scale of the problem of water management: proposals came in from the Americas to the Middle East, and from Africa to Europe. The 65 proposals selected to advance to jury consideration will appear on the Seeds&Chips platform to share their work on developing intelligent methods and sustainable practices to meet the challenges of water conservation, pollution, waste, and sanitation.
The jury, composed of experts and scientific advisors to the Summit from IIT, CNR, and UNIDO ITPO Italy, will select and announce the 30 project finalists on 2 February 2018. These 30 semi- finalists will be awarded an exhibition space at the next edition of the Global Food Innovation Summit, to be held from 7-10 May 2018 at MiCo, Milano Congressi. The final 5 projects will receive a hospitality stipend for travel and accommodation costs to facilitate their participation in the Summit. Finally, the best project among the final 5 will receive a 10,000 euro award in recognition of their work.
Along with this cash prize, a special award dedicated to and named for Ambassador Giorgio Giacomelli, will be given to the winner of the WaterFirst! Initiative on May 10, during the Summit. Giacomelli, a Milanese diplomat who passed away in 2017, devoted his illustrious career to the conservation and management of water resources. In 2006, he was named an honorary member of the UN Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation by then Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan.
Director of UNIDO ITPO Italy Diana Battaggia stated, “Emily Dickinson once wrote that ‘water is taught by thirst’. Today, almost 2 billion people suffer from thirst, with World Bank estimates expecting that figure to double by 2050. It’s not a problem that only affects developing countries: it affects the whole world, and the threat is only increasing. In large cities like Mexico City, Buenos Aires, and Barcelona freshwater resources are running out and brackish water is inflitrating the subsoil. The fact is that 97% of the Earth’s water supply is salt water and we need low cost technologies to desalinate it. This is but one example which highlights the central role that technology must play in facing the challenge of the century.”
Roberto Reali of the CNR’s Department of Bio-Agroalimentari Sciences confirmed this: “The problem of resources has always been at the crux of agricultural production. Ameliorating access to resources, whether in advanced or developing countries, is the only way to shed light on both the constraints as well as the opportunities we face. It is only by investigating the planet’s resources that we can hope to formulate some answers.”
IIT Scientific Director Roberto Cingolani added, “If we look at the distribution of water resources around the world it’s clear that water is scarce where there are few energy resources, and such shortages lead to conflict and instability. The study of technology for the conservation and sustainable management of water must be a priority at the global level, and it is an area to which our Institute has been dedicated for a very long time.”
