Mosab Abushama
Mosab Abushama is a photographer, filmmaker, and visual storyteller from Sudan, whose work confronts themes of cultural identity, conflict, and human resilience. He is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he continues to refine his voice as a filmmaker and photographer.
Abushama began his career as a visual artist amidst the socio-political upheavals in Sudan, where his phone camera became a vital instrument to document both the beauty of everyday life and the brutal realities of war and displacement.
His photography project Tadween, has garnered international acclaim, earning Mosab prestigious awards and grants, including support from the Arab Documentary Photography Program (AFAC) in partnership with the Magnum Foundation, and the Prince Claus Fund. The project is a personal documentation of life in war, exploring how people adapt and coexist amid conflict and examining how war has affected their way of life, having lived through the war himself.
Abushama is also a 2024 Tasweer Photography Project award recipient.
His work bridges the space between documentary and conceptual art, reflecting visual media’s power to evoke empathy and provoke thought. Through his lens, Abushama seeks to amplify marginalized voices and safeguard cultural narratives, creating work that resonates deeply with both personal and collective memory.
Photo - Life Won’t Stop
In January 2024, the photographer was asked by a friend to document his wedding in Omdurman, a city constantly targeted by airstrikes. “Despite the clashes and random shelling in the city, the wedding was a simple but joyous occasion with family and friends. The war in Sudan, which began in April 2023, brought horrors and displacement, forcing me to leave my childhood home and move to another part of the city. It was a time none of us ever expected to live through. Yet, this wedding was a reminder of the joy of everyday life still possible amidst the tragedy and despair,“ explains Mosab.
