L’avocado ha destato un clamore che raramente si è visto negli ultimi decenni. Il peso della sua crescente domanda ricade sullo Stato messicano di Michoacán, dove le foreste vengono disboscate e incendiate illegalmente per essere utilizzate per le piantagioni di avocado. Nel 2021, il solo Michoacán ha prodotto circa 1,8 milioni di tonnellate del frutto verde. Le implicazioni sono davvero molte: nella guerra della droga, i cartelli sono stati attratti dai potenziali introiti derivanti dal commercio di avocado; a metà del 2022, le esportazioni verso gli Stati Uniti hanno dovuto subire una temporanea interruzione a causa dell’eccesso di domanda rispetto alla produzione. I consumatori erano più preoccupati di una carenza di guacamole per le loro feste che delle allarmanti implicazioni e conseguenze. Tuttora la brama mondiale di “oro verde” ha superato l’offerta e non si intravede alcun vero cambiamento.

Avocado has caused a hype rarely seen in recent decades. The burden of the rising demand lies mainly on the Mexican state of Michoacán, where forests are being illegally cleared by fire to plant avocado plantations. In 2021, Michoacán alone produced some 1.8 million tons of the green fruit. There are many implications: in the ongoing drug war, the cartels have become drawn to the potential revenue from the avocado trade; in mid-2022, exports to the United States, the largest consumer of the fruit, had to be temporarily halted, but consumers were more concerned about a guacamole shortage for their parties than the alarming connections and ramifications.
The worldwide hunger for “green gold” has surpassed the supply, and a real change is not in sight yet.
