Da bambina Alessia Rollo passava ore seduta a tavola cercando di finire i pasti. Trovava il cibo di una noia mortale! Preferiva disegnare nel piatto invece di mangiare. Così, sua madre continuava a ripeterle: “Non si gioca con il cibo!”.
Più di trent’anni dopo, questa frase è tornata in mente alla fotografa e ha deciso di usarla per esplorare le diverse relazioni che il cibo può attivare, ma anche per comprendere i vari aspetti di un luogo, le abitudini culturali e sociali, le questioni ambientali che passano attraverso il cibo. Per far ciò ha utilizzato un semplice meccanismo visivo: si è introdotta in diversi contesti nei quali il cibo viene prodotto o consumato, chiedendo alle persone di condividere con lei un pezzo della loro vita quotidiana legato a questo elemento. Ha deciso di apparire nell’immagine perché voleva essere parte della vita delle persone ed esprimersi da una prospettiva soggettiva usando l’ironia e l’auto-esplorazione.

When she was a child, she spent hours sitting around a table and trying to finish her meals. Food was soooo boring for her! She preferred to draw on the plate with it, rather than eat it. So, her mother kept on repeating: “Don’t play with food!”
More than three decades later, this sentence comes back to her mind, and she decided to use it to explore different relationships food can activate, but also the layers of understanding about a place, cultural and social habits, environmental issues that go through food. She used a simple visual mechanism: she introduced herself in different contexts where food is produced or consumed. She asked people to share with her a piece of their daily life connected with this element. She decided to appear into the picture because she wanted to be part of people’s life and speak from a subjective perspective using irony and self-exploring.
