Many stories are woven together at Lake Kivu, a majestic lake at the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Beneath the placid beauty of the waters and the fishing communities that surround it lies turbulence and uncertainty. Climate change brings more frequent storms, warming waters, and dwindling fish stocks. Pollution from plastic waste and the discovery of reserves of methane gas in the lake’s sediment threatens the future of this delicate ecosystem. This project is a multifaceted document of the complex web of dependence, exploitation, and respect that links people to their natural environment.
