TWO WEEKENDS DEDICATED TO FOLKLORE, ANTICIPATING THE FAIR

TWO WEEKENDS DEDICATED TO FOLKLORE, ANTICIPATING THE FAIR

Tradition is once again the protagonist from Saturday September 25th, with the introduction of the painter of the Palio degli Asini, which will close the calendar on Sunday October 3rd

The first time was the stylized donkey painted by Pinot Gallizio, in 1932. After a long pause, after the Second World War, the idea was resumed in 1947 and 1948, and then became customary starting from 1967, when the Giostra delle Cento Torri was born, with only one interruption in 1976. We are talking about the creation of the cloth awarded as a prize to the winner of the Palio degli Asini race, made by an artist chosen every year to lend prestige to this tradition. This year will see Chef Cesare Giaccone as protagonist.

Saturday September 25th at 11.00, at the Pala Alba Capitale - the "house" of Alba, the Italian Capital of Corporate  Culture, set up in Piazza San Paolo - the first of the two weekends dedicated to folklore opens with the presentation of the Pittore del Palio 2021, an artist who contributed to making the Langhe area and its cuisine known all over the world. A passion that grew in parallel with that for painting, which accompanied him throughout his life, helping to fuel his fame, along with his character and personality.

In the place where the corporate culture is celebrated, together with the chef who has inextricably linked his name to Albaretto Torre, Angelo Galeasso will take the stage, and will be rewarded as "Friend of the Carousel" on the 60th anniversary of the Art Gallery that bears his name. A tribute to his activity, which in the seventies and eighties played a key role in the choice of the painters of the Palio.

On Sunday September 26th, the Bela Trifolera returns. Suspended last year due to Covid-19, this is a beauty contest between the nine boroughs of Alba for the title of “Most Beautiful in Town”.  At 8.30 pm, at the Guido Sacerdote arena in Alba, introduced by Sonia De Castelli and live on Radio Alba, the young women participating will perform in three different events (in medieval costume with the colors of their boroughs, dressed as trifolere, truffle hunters, and in evening dress). The jury, chaired by Antonella Levi, will then award Miss Bela Trifolera, Miss Eleganza and Miss Profumo di Ricordi.

The event is free, and reservations can be requested online at www.fieradeltartufo.org.

Folklore and tradition will have their climax the following weekend, the first of October, with a completely innovative formula. It begins on Saturday October 2nd, in Piazza Risorgimento, with the Investiture of the Podestà and the historical re-enactment in costume. Great news this year: the re-enactment will no longer precede the Palio, but it will be an independent event, which for this edition - given the Covid related impossibility for the boroughs to prepare a new original show - will not see any prize given for the best parade. The show for the public is guaranteed however, since each borough will re-propose an episode taken from their past repertoire.

The evening will start at 8.30 pm, with the Investiture of the Podestà announced by the Flag-wavers and Musicians of the City of Alba.

Finally, on Sunday October 3rd, starting at 3.30 pm, the Palio degli Asini also will make a comeback in its historic location around the Duomo. Four blocks of grandstands will be mounted in the Risorgimento, Rossetti and Miroglio squares, offering a privileged view of the hilarious race, which will also be broadcast on three LED walls and in streaming. The race will see two heats of 9 donkeys each, and the first three who finish each heat will be the six finalists. All around the area, extras in medieval costumes will contribute to creating an atmosphere of other times. To mark the different moments of the day, interludes will give spectators an unforgettable experience: flag-wavers, musicians, dancers and men in military attire. At the end of the competition, the coveted cloth, painted this year by chef Cesare Giaccone, will be awarded to the winning borough.

"The calendar of folklore events, with the return of the public, represents the culmination of a path towards normality, after these two years marked by Covid - says the president of the Giostra delle Cento Torri, Luca Sensibile -. It is really important to give a signal to restart and rekindle the enthusiasm of the boroughs, great protagonists of the Truffle Fair. They are the ones offering commitment and passion in the organization of the Parade, the Palio and all the folklore and traditional events. Doing nothing could have been an easier choice, but these two weekends want to be a sign for the city, for tourists, but also for the villagers themselves: be ready, the car is restarting. We are confident, next year, that we’ll be able to return to normality, continuing to pass on the testimony of our traditions”.
