Awe and enthusiasm. Joy and delight. The success of “Scintille d’Opera” has not ceased to shine and bring new warmth to the Festival Verdi, which will celebrate its twenty-first edition in Parma and Busseto from September 24 to October 17 2021, making Verdi's music resound at Teatro Regio di Parma and diffusing it out of the theatre, thanks to the sixth edition of Verdi Off from September 18 to October 17 2021. The Festival will spread and unleash its enthusiasm, resonating in the squares, vibrating in the parks and streets, animating the courtyards and neighbourhoods, in the suburbs and in the city centre, expanding to the province of Parma and embracing audiences from places and institutes of care, suffering and detention.

The XXI Festival Verdi is dedicated to Graham Vick, recently passed away. He was an acute and extraordinarily sensitive artist, attentive towards young talents, capable of highlighting the hypocrisies and the contradictions of our times through the notes of century-old scores. He managed to introduce wide and diverse audiences to the world of opera by valorizing its values, sentiments and themes which intertwine with our contemporary, daily lives. In order to recall and testify his talent and visionary creativity, Teatro Regio will host the public meeting dedicated to him “You do not need to be educated to be touched, to be moved and excited by opera” on Saturday, September 25 of 2021 at 10.30 am, which will be in live streaming on Rai Cultura channel and the social media pages (Facebook and Youtube) of Teatro Regio di Parma. The meeting will be moderated by Carla Moreni and will include the participation of superintendents and artistic directors, music critics, national and international artists who collaborated with Graham Vick in theatrical productions that already represent true milestones in history of musical theatre and opera. Luigi Ferrari, Angelo Foletto, Francesco Giambrone, Ron Howell, Jonathan Groves, Gianfranco Mariotti, Alberto Mattioli, Fortunato Ortombina, Nicholas Payne, Paolo Pinamonti, Alessio Vlad, Richard Willacy already confirmed their participation.

The Festival presents Un ballo in maschera (Gustavo III), in a new staging by Jacopo Spirei from the original project by Graham Vick and conducted by Roberto Abbado, Simon Boccanegra, performed in its concert form by Michele Mariotti, the Messa da Requiem conducted by Daniele Gatti. Such main titles are scheduled at the XXI Festival Verdi, in the year of Parma Capitale italiana della Cultura, to which are added the Concerto sinfonico corale, an important recital of parlor romances with Lisette Oropesa, the Gala Verdiano with Eleonora Buratto on the day of the Maestro’s birthday, Elio, Francesco Micheli, Enrico Melozzi, Fabrizio Gifuni in the three AroundVerdi events, an original version of Traviata that will be staged in the squares on the Caravan Verdiano, the charity opera gala Fuoco di gioia and more concerts and meetings.

Among the protagonists of the 2021 edition, realized together with La Toscanini and Fondazione Teatro Comunale di Bologna, institutional partners of the Festival Verdi, the Festival presents artists such as Anna Maria Chiuri, Maria Agresta, Elina Garanĉa, Maria Teresa Leva, Angela Meade, Amartuvshin Enkhbat, Michele Pertusi, Antonio Poli, Piero Pretti, together with the ensembles of the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, the Orchestra and Coro del Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the Coro del Teatro Regio di Parma prompted by Martino Faggiani.

“The Festival Verdi finally returns to Teatro Regio di Parma - states Anna Maria Meo, General Manager of Teatro Regio and Artistic Director of Festival Verdi - After last year’s extraordinarily complex and special experience of the open-air theatre at Parco Ducale, our “returning home” is meant to represent a new beginning, a sign of a concrete reprise after the many limits and challenges we had to overcome together. The sparks lit by “Scintille d’Opera” last year aimed at offering a renewed enthusiasm to the local community and the public of enthusiasts, who are slowly starting to travel around the world again and who are already showing their wish to return to live the unique experience of Verdi’s music in his lands. This year, they can enjoy the proposal of three debuts on three different days and on the three weekends of the month, though with only one opera in its stage form. Sparks of a cultural and musical proposal that continues to shine for quality and rigour, originality and value that safeguards the musical and scenic element, presenting a series of widespread activities, that brings the joy of music to meet the public and that we hope from next year to renew through a program at “full capacity” with its formula of 4 debuts in 4 consecutive days for 4 weeks that has made the Festival Verdi a unique reality, appreciated and attended by international audiences from all continents”.

I would like to renew my gratitude to the institutions, partners and sponsors who have shown their support and closeness to the Teatro Regio di Parma and to the Festival Verdi, even in such a long and difficult period, allowing us to continue the activity in the wake of the path undertaken in recent years, and to the workers of the Teatro Regio who have always made our Festival Verdi a great festival.”

OPERA SHOWS AND CONCERTS

Festival Verdi 2021 kicks off on Friday, September 24 at 8pm with Un ballo in maschera (Gustavo III) at Teatro Regio di Parma (shows on October 1, 8, 15 of 2021 at 8pm), ), in a new staging by Jacopo Spirei from the original project by Graham Vick in a new staging by Graham Vick, a debut of his considering such a Verdian opera, with sets and costumes by Richard Hudson, lighting design by Giuseppe Di Iorio and choreography by Virginia Spallarossa. Risk? Revolution? Or to castrate the establishment to win the love of the people? ... of his page? Of his best friend's wife? The revisionist lifestyle of Gustavo III has brought him many friends as well as many enemies, while he himself sought danger with all the self-destructive brilliance of an artist, whose greatest creation will be his own death”.

AROUND VERDI

Three shows in collaboration with Verdi Off and a brand new commission realized by the Società dei concerti di Parma for AroundVerdi, the section of the Festival where opera and the words of the Maestro intertwine with other languages.

In Opera Horror Picture Show on Monday, September 27 at 8.30pm at Teatro Regio di Parma, Elio and Francesco Micheli summon the four children of our province to conquer the world: Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi - The Golden Boys of the golden age of Italian music: the XIX century. Four boys from the countryside capable of seducing the audiences of the great capitals with the revolutionary power of words and of desperate, cheerful, lively stories. It is also thanks to them if opera has become the most widespread form of live performance in the world. “It’s a crazy story that we all like to tell. Or at least, to dream”. On stage the soprano Adriana Iozzia accompanied on the piano by Simone Soldati.  In collaboration with ATIR.

In Letteralmente Verdi on Tuesday, October 5 2021 at 8.30 pm, Fabrizio Gifuni narrates Un ballo in maschera through the words of the Maestro himself, giving voice to his letters, selected by Giuseppe Martini, in the show created by the Società dei Concerti di Parma with the musics from the opera and performed by Corrado Giuffredi on clarinet and Federico Nicoletta on piano.

Gustavo III, Una vendetta in domino, Un ballo in maschera… «e poi e poi e poi!!…». The birth of such an opera was one of the most tormented: the continuous change imposed by the Neapolitan censorship, the repeated modifications to the title, the transpositions into different historical periods... eventually, the opera conceived by Verdi was unrecognizable. In the end, the composer decided to leave Naples. «It has been decided that here the Vendetta in domino will no longer be performed. Ricordi wrote me on behalf of the Management and the Government to propose a performance in Milan but, to tell you the truth, I would rather choose Rome instead». Therefore, in Rome, one of the smoothest, most perfect and representative masterpieces of the world of Verdi was born: the love which attracts and divides, the conflict between public and private, chance and fortune governing everything. Luckily, thanks to Verdi's remaining correspondence, reading the passionate genesis of Un ballo in maschera through such letters represents one further, incredible experience to enjoy.

An orchestra, a conductor, some of the most famous pages of the classical repertoire for Un rave in maschera a concert that is anything but usual on Wednesday, October 13 2021 at 8.30pm at Teatro Regio di Parma. On stage the Orchestra Notturna Clandestina, born at the beginning of the decade at Teatro Valle Occupato with the aim of bringing classical music to lesser-usual places, to make it inclusive and bring it to new ears and cut the habits of old clichés. The composer and cellist Enrico Melozzi (conductor of the resident orchestra at Festival di Sanremo for the performance of the artists Maneskin, Achille Lauro, Pinguini Tattici Nucleari, Anastasio, Noemi, Junior Cally, Fasma) will conduct the orchestra for a unique evening, experiencing the passionate genesis of the opera Un ballo in maschera: “A chance to discover that classical music is not as boring as some have led us to believe”.

MEETINGS, OPEN REHEARSALS

The composer, the style, the genesis of the works, the literary masterpieces that inspired their production are some of the themes explored by Giuseppe Martini in Prima che si alzi il sipario, a series of meetings for the presentation of the works scheduled at Teatro Regio: Un ballo in maschera (Gustavo III) (Tuesday, September 21 2021, 5 pm), Messa da Requiem (Tuesday, September 28 2021, 5 pm), Simon Boccanegra (Tuesday, October 5 2021, 5 pm), with the participation of the young singers of the Conservatorio “Arrigo Boito” di Parma, coordinated by Donatella Saccardi, interpreting the most famous pieces.

For Pagine d’Opera, four conversations around music, opera and its protagonists, in collaboration with Scintille Book Club at the Gran Caffè del Teatro, moderated by Giuseppe Martini: on Thursday, September 30 2021 at 5pm the meeting with Alberto Mattioli on the pages of Va’, pensiero and Pazzo per l’opera; Friday October 8 2021 at 5pm the meeting with Fabio Larovere, Andrea Faini on the pages of V e W. The last rehearsals of Un ballo in maschera (Gustavo III) and Simon Boccanegra before their debut: crucial moments in which the complexity of the work on stage and behind the scenes finds an exciting synthesis (Dress rehearsals for Un ballo in maschera (Gustavo III) on Monday, September 20 2021 at 8pm and on Wednesday, September 22 2021 at 3.30pm; dress rehearsal for Simon Boccanegra on Wednesday, October 6 2021 at 2pm).

OPERA! THE EXHIBIITON

Does Opera dialogue with society? And to what extent? Is Opera a political machine? Does its meaning change over time? Does the show happen exclusively on the stage or is the audience in the seats the one who is represented? The purpose of Opera! - conceived on the occasion of Parma 2020, open at Palazzo del Governatore in Parma from September 18 2021 to January 13 2022, produced by Comune di Parma in collaboration with Teatro Regio di Parma, curated by Gloria Bianchino and Giuseppe Martini and with set up by Margherita Palli Rota – is answering such questions, focusing on the relationship between opera and society. A total of 514 showcasec pieces such as paintings, ancient books, prints, photographs, librettos, magazines, archived documents, costumes, stage objects and audiovisual materials from 75 public and private loaners. The exhibition includes: the paintings by Francesco Hayez I vespri Siciliani (1846) from  Galleria di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Roma; Papa Urbano II sulla piazza di Clermont predica la prima Crociata (1835) from Collezione della Fondazione Cariplo di Milano; the painting Au théatre di Federico Zandomeneghi (1885-1895) from Istituto Matteucci di Viareggio; stage costumes and dresses such as the Balenciaga model from Tirelli Costumi di Roma.

The exhibition offers a panorama where Opera proves to be malleable in relation to the change of times, though representing a dimension where to preserve the rituals of our shared, daily life. The show is not just what takes place on stage, but also what is in front of it, as the audience is Opera itself. VERDI OFF

Realized by Teatro Regio di Parma with the Municipality of Parma and the Association “Parma, io ci sto!”, a special project of the Reggio Parma Festival, Verdi Off returns from September 18 to October 17 2021 and with its sixth edition, renews and strengthens its mission: to create opportunities to discover, inhabit and live in the name of Giuseppe Verdi the most beautiful, unique and surprising places of the city and the territory. The Festival presents free, widespread and multidisciplinary shows that will involve tourists, families, children, enthusiasts and curious visitors who, on the occasion of the Festival Verdi, are in Parma and in the province of Parma in Busseto, San Secondo, Sala Baganza, Traversetolo, Zibello, Sissa. Such a consistent number of territories have been included thanks to the agreement and collaboration between Teatro Regio di Parma, the Province of Parma and the Comuni dell’Unione Pedemontana Parmense.

Alongside the many events that have become a classic of the festival (Cuckoo Verdi, Bianchi Rossi and Verdi, Con Verdi in carrozza, Recital in the garden, Verdi Recital, Verdi Band), whose program will be presented on September 10 2021, there are four projects that characterize this year’s edition.

Saturday, 18 September 2021 from 6 pm the event Verdi sotto casa returns, bringing dance, music, theatre, juggling events in the streets and simultaneously in the seven districts of the city of Parma, to invite the public to share the joy and emotion of the live show. At the end of the event, it will be proposed to sing altogether the Va’, pensiero with singers, musicians and actors. A widespread project that will animate streets, courtyards and gardens, condominium spaces, places of greater social fragility, reception centres, residences for the elderly, to bring everyone closer to the Maestro’s music with shows and performances created ad hoc.

On the opening day of Verdi Off in Piazza Duomo on Saturday, September 18 September 2021 at 6.00 pm, La città che danza will animate the city. The project is conceived and directed by Riccardo Olivier, assistant choreographer Alex McCabe, produced by Fattoria Vittadini, in collaboration with Accademia Danza e Dintorni and Professione Danza and with the saxophonist Andrea Mocci. La città che danza is intended as a public action, the result of an intense work involving young people from 6 to 19 years old, realized with the oratories of the Diocesi di Parma, in collaboration with Associazione Nazionale Famiglie di Persone con Disabilità Intellettiva e/o Relazionale, the Cooperativa Eidè and with the Centro Giovani di Baganzola, a concert that tells a city, a non-stopping choreographic polyphony of different voices which flourishes once again as the result of a reflection on what the Va’, pensiero tells us still nowadays, even after the pandemic period we have experienced and which we are still experiencing in different ways.

iVerdi is the site specific project for Parma and the Festival Verdi curated by Karakorum Teatro and the Centro Teatrale MaMiMò opening on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 September 2021, and which can then be enjoyed for the entire duration of Verdi Off. An unprecedented immersive experience that, starting from Teatro Regio, will lead the audience to rediscover the places of Parma through the eyes (and ears) of Giuseppe Verdi. The proposal is based on the Laika format, which allows the individual viewer to communicate, via their smartphone (equipped with earphones or headphones, with a well-charged battery and an active internet connection), with a virtual poetic entity, capable of guiding them through a Telegram profile on a journey that will be traced by the spectator himself, in space and in narration. The participants will be challenged with choices to make ethical and aesthetic decisions, and from stage to stage they will follow a unique path through the spaces and places (duration of about 90 minutes, about 1.5 km of distance) where the narrative and existential story of Giuseppe Verdi is told, his way of seeing the world, Italy and the Italians, to the rediscovery of vices, virtues, passions and fears of contemporary people, all observing what is there around in a new way, entering into a relationship with places through action: walking, observing, sitting, writing, moving, collecting, leaving trace and legacy for the future generations.

Verdi Graff Contest, on Saturday, September 18 from 9.30 am to 9 pm in Parma (Piazzale Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa), is the call by Mc Luc Culture to graffiti writers from all over Italy from the age of 16, called to interpret and re-interpret the figure and work of Giuseppe Verdi in new creations in which the immortal myth dialogues with contemporaneity: with the graffiti technique, each artist will be able to interpret a content that tells the story like a frame. The focus of the theme will be to be able to identify a link between an event recounted by Verdi in one of his works and an event in history or contemporary art, as if the time machine had put the two events in contact. The artists will create the works on 125cmx250cm panels in OBS material and will use professional spray for graffiti in mixed media: sprays, brushes, rollers, stencils. This offers the possibility of expression to the artistic talent of young people by enhancing graffiti as a communicative form of urban creativity and contemporary language, to interpret the universe, ideals, vision, creativity, genius, humanity of Giuseppe Verdi and his works contextualizing it in our day, to create works that can be exhibited and available to the community, to stimulate creativity and create a meeting point between tradition and contemporaneity. Registration by July 15th. The complete regulation on festivalverdi.it

Participation. Inclusion. Multidisciplinarity. Diffusion. These are the key words of Verdi Off – states Barbara Minghetti, Curator of Verdi Off – The participation of the artists, who suffered much in both creative and professional terms during the lockdown, to which we addressed several calls, to be able to include the greatest number and greatest variety of multidisciplinary and quality shows in review; active participation of the citizens, of the people who will look out of the windows, will open their courtyards and gardens to host and share our joy; participation of people in the streets and squares; participation of the most vulnerable places in the city and in the province of Parma, thanks in particular to the collaboration of the social inclusion department of the Welfare Department of the Municipality of Parma, of ACER, of social housing, together with reception centres, residences for the elderly, the hospices. A multi-disciplinary and contemporary layout, as the figure of Verdi speaks to the future and to young people, to whom we dedicate many projects related to street art and new technologies, which could be a new opportunity to meet with others and with ourselves”.

A LIFE IN MUSIC

Music. Memory. The notes of Giuseppe Verdi. A meeting. Thus begins the story of Antonio and Silvia, narrated in 9 acts and 9 Verdi interludes, in A life in music, the first game for smartphones and tablets produced by an opera theater, commissioned by Teatro Regio di Parma and the Festival Verdi to TuoMuseo, international leader and award-winning in the gaming sector for cultural institutions, and developed in close collaboration with the scientific direction of the Festival Verdi. The game is freely available in Italian, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Chinese language on the App store and Google Play Store.

GIUSEPPE VERDI, IL CIGNO DI BUSSETO

From its first assignment as organist in Roncole to his failure to enter the Conservatorio di Milano; from his matrimony with Giuseppina Strepponi to the success of Nabucco, from the construction of Villa Sant’Agata to the project for Casa Verdi, and moreover, the foundation of the Club 27, and so forth. The book Giuseppe Verdi, il cigno di Busseto, written by Cristina Bersanelli and published by the Teatro Regio di Parma, introduces the long career and adventurous life of the great composer to young readers. Words are complemented by the drawings of Patrizia Barbieri, who translated into shape and colour the characters and anecdotes, telling the story of Verdi’s transformation from a 'small duck' in the province of Parma to the magnificent swan (i.e. 'cigno') that spreads its wings all over the world.

The book can be purchased for 10€ on teatroregioparma.it or in the theatre’s bookshop. It is followed by other volumes inspired by the lives of Maria Callas, Gaetano Donizetti, Giacomo Puccini, and other will follow about the figures of Gioachino Rossini, Vincenzo Bellini, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Arturo Toscanini, Carlo Bergonzi, Luciano Pavarotti, Renata Tebaldi, so as to widen an editorial series aimed at deepening the younger generations’ acquaintance to the great legends of Opera.
