THE DAWN OF WINE

THE DAWN OF WINE

The territory celebrates the touristic harvest with the symbolic cutting of bunches of Dolcetto grapes at the Alba Enological School

You shouldn’t change a winning team: this year the "wine and truffle" duo is reconfirmed, standard bearers known worldwide that testify to the excellence of the Langhe, Monferrato and Roero areas. To ratify this pact, today, Saturday September 26th, they will be the protagonists of the event "L'Alba del Vino", organized by the "Cantine di Alba" association in collaboration with the City of Alba, the State Higher Education Institute “Umberto I” of Alba and the International Alba White Truffle Fair Authority. Wine producers, students and teachers at the Enological School gathered at the Enotria course institute in Alba to celebrate the harvest that opens to tourists and seekers of new experiences.

"With its 921 hectares of vineyards, Alba is the third-ranking vineyard town in the province of Cuneo, boasting as many as 27 different denominations - says the President of the “Cantine di Alba” association, Roberto Abellonio -. This was a particular vintage year, with a climate marked by high temperature changes and, speaking of precipitation, by 12 acute phenomena, compared to an average of 4/5 recorded in the last 20 years. Today's encounter represents an event for the promotion of the territory, the cellars, the City of Alba, the Enological School and all the institutions and Authorities that actively work in our area ".

"For the first time, this autumn the wine tourists of our hills have the opportunity to safely experience the magic that lies behind the birth of a new wine by participating in the touristic harvest - declares the Mayor of the City of Alba, Carlo Bo -. In recent months, the Municipality of Alba has worked to finally regulate an activity that was in great demand in the past, but until now had been difficult to realize due to a complex interpretation of the rules. The innovative protocol that regulates this new service for wine lovers, agreed upon with the Labor Inspectorate of Cuneo and the Spresal of the Asl Cn2, has been extended to the entire provincial territory to be used also by the companies of the numerous municipalities of Langhe and Roero ".

"Agriculture, in this area, has understood how to represent a very appealing system: our vineyards, together with the wines that are produced here, and known and appreciated all over the world, are an undisputed driving force for the tourism system - adds the Council Member for Tourism, Shows and Events of the Municipality of Alba, Emanuele Bolla -. Our wonderful territory gave us the opportunity to become part of the UNESCO heritage sites in 2014, precisely by virtue of the uniqueness of the wine landscapes of Langhe, Roero and Monferrato. We’ve chosen to also restart from here, in this very special year”.

"It’s a pleasure and an honor to meet again at the Oenological School, a pantheon of wine that next year will celebrate its 140 years of history and the training of great winemakers - says Mario Sandri, the Albese city councilor with responsibility for agriculture -. We think we have also made a contribution to the world of wine as the Municipality of Alba, working to allow tourists to experience the thrill of the grape harvest with the proper safeguards. A few simple rules and a clear system for accommodation facilities and wineries that makes it possible to communicate the activity of the tourist and educational harvest ".

"Our students are the real 'Dawn of wine', those who will carry on the oenology of Alba: they are the future custodians and storytellers of the wine world of this territory - says the director of the State Higher Education Institute" Umberto I " of Alba, Antonella Germini -. The biggest thanks go to the students, who are extraordinary in this restart. They have been complying with the rules, which are very difficult,  with a great sense of responsibility”.

"Our thanks goes to the producers' association 'Cantine di Alba', the Municipal Administration of the City of Alba and the Enological School, with the young people who will be the great protagonists of our future – sums up the President of the International Fair Organization of the Alba White Truffle, Liliana Allena -. This year finds us united to create a system: wine is an excellence of the territory like the Alba White Truffle, and this combination allows us to be appreciated all over the world, with a decidedly important economic impact. We are seizing the opportunities of this very special year to relaunch and innovate, together, by working as a team ".

The symbolic cutting of some bunches of grapes in the vineyards of the Enological School followed the in-depth analysis dedicated to the touristic harvest. Under the careful guidance of the students of the Enotria committee, the participants harvested some bunches of Dolcetto grapes. These were delivered to the new generation of oenologists, who promised to return them at the next Vinum National Fair in 2021, suitably bottled and transformed into Dolcetto d'Alba DOC, who at the end will receive a diploma of “grape harvester”. Marisa Saltetti, Ivano Martinetti, Emanuele Bolla, Stefania Balocco, Elisa Boschiazzo and Nadia Gomba will be the recipients.
