TUBER PRIMAE NOCTIS CELEBRATES THE START OF THE TRUFFLE SEASON

TUBER PRIMAE NOCTIS CELEBRATES THE START OF THE TRUFFLE SEASON

The "search" for the Alba White Truffle opens with the event at the Castello di Roddi: 13 fairs are scheduled in Piedmont

The beginning of autumn marks, in Piedmont, the start of the hunting season for the Alba White Truffle: to celebrate it, the International Alba White Truffle Fair Authority and the historic partner of the Alta Langa DOCG Consortium have organized the dinner event “Tuber Primae Noctis” on the evening of Sunday September 20th. Thanks to the collaboration with the Piedmont Region, the City of Alba and the most important players in the supply chain of this territory, which are  the Langhe Monferrato Roero Tourism Authority, the National Center for Truffle Studies, the Union of Piedmont Trifulau Associations and representatives of all the national and regional Fairs of the white truffle in Piedmont -, the Castle of Roddi has therefore become the setting for the “Truffle New Year”.

Mauro Carbone, Director of the National Center for Truffle Studies, provided a picture of the expectations regarding truffles for this season, and will contribute scientific interest to the evening, starting from the meteorological data collected by Professor Fulvio Romano, honorary member of the Italian Meteorological Society.

"According to the findings from the beginning of 2020, we can expect a promising truffle season. Compared to a particularly dry winter, spring was rainier than normal, with cool and humid weather until mid-July and significant rains in early September. If this heat wave ends now and new rains arrive, the average quality - which overall we expect to be more than good - should reach peaks of excellence. Taking Alba as a reference, we had a 25% increase in rain compared to 2019: 46 rainfalls have been recorded since the beginning of the year, compared to 37 last year. It must be said that in this area there were few systemic rains, while there were many thunderstorms: production could be 'patchy', therefore, in the south of Piedmont".

In any case, the hunting season itself will dispel any possible doubt, and officially opened today, Monday  September 21st, after the period of biological shutdown established by regional law 16/2008 from September 1st to 20th of each year, to avoid excessive exploitation of the environment during a fundamental moment for the ripening of truffles. In the hills of Piedmont, below the Po river, in October and November there are over 20 Truffle Fairs that celebrate the Alba White Truffle. Alba’s Fair is the longest-running and has reached its 90th edition, while Moncalvo is in its 66th edition: others are more recent, but the prestige of the truffle and the existence of markets where it can be purchased have ancient roots. Fairs, called Market Exhibitions or Festivals, have in fact always been a pleasant opportunity to buy truffles and local products: from wines to cured meats, from vegetables to desserts. There is no shortage of traditional dishes, cultural and musical moments, handicraft products, art exhibitions, outdoor activities and truffle hunting experiences. Attending these fairs gives you an unbeatable opportunity to travel through - among vineyards and woods - the hills of Turin, Langhe, Roero, Monferrato, to discover towns and cities of southern Piedmont that  climb the hills or lie in the bottom of the valleys. You can delight in trattorias and restaurants offering dishes with truffles: from traditional cooks with handmade pasta, to young ones who have refined the tradition, to the most creative chefs who form the extraordinary group of “starred” personalities active in the area.

In this very special year, 13 truffle fairs are scheduled in Southern Piedmont.

"The many Truffle Fairs existing in the area, all different and characteristic, are a suggestive experience in which the taste of a product is enhanced by the frame of a really fascinating landscape - declares the President of the International Alba White Truffle Fair Organization, Liliana Allena -. With Tuber Primae Noctis we officially kick off this new season of hunting for the Alba White Truffle, the most precious fruit offered by the earth, and which in Piedmont has boasted, for almost a century, a genuine district, with Alba the undisputed world capital. It's a great feeling to celebrate this evening with all the protagonists of the world of truffles, in a great party enjoyed between tradition and innovation: we pass from the history of a town Roddi, which perfectly embodies the peasant culture, to the innovation of the Truffle Hub, the  new location of the Truffle Fair and seat of digital experiences that will reach the whole world from here".

"The official start of the season focuses attention on an important activity like the hunt for truffles, whose candidacy for the intangible heritage of humanity represents a great challenge for our city and for all the Italian truffle communities", comments the Councilman for Tourism of the City of Alba, Emanuele Bolla

The Vice President of the Piedmont Region, Fabio Carosso, whose delegation also includes the Truffle, affirms: "I am very happy that the Alba White Truffle Fair will be held again this year, because it represents a very important moment for all of Piedmont and not only for our Langhe: the Fair and the Alba White Truffle are the ambassadors of Made in Piedmont and Made in Italy in the world. For us it was absolutely essential for the Fair to take place, because it’s a stimulus for other Municipalities, other festivals, other events to do always more and always better: The Tuber magnatum Pico is a product known all over the world by now and Alba, as the capital of the truffle, is increasingly called upon to demonstrate to others that we can and must go forward. Now we’re waiting for the tourists, who we hope will be numerous, including Italians: we know that there is a great desire for truffles among our Milanese and Turin neighbors. The data tell us that this year, due to the limitations imposed by the Coronavirus, many people from Piedmont remained in our Langhe: we hope it is a good omen for a successful edition".

The Alta Langa DOCG Consortium, whose Vice President Giovanni Carlo Bussi talked about the project linked to the appellation, is Partner in the evening’s organization. They have strengthened the bond between wine and truffles that has made this territory famous all over the world, thus taking up the theme central to this 90th edition of the International Alba White Truffle Fair.

"Wine and truffles have several points in common, first of all the importance of the “terroir”. Like truffles, also wine, and the Alta Langa wines in particular, are also the fruit of these lands. The climatic trend, the sun, the rain, the heat, the cold, the wind, the humidity, and again: the composition of the soil, the ground, the subsoil, microorganisms, macrofauna all affect them equally. A series of variables - some controllable and analyzable, others completely unpredictable - which are counterbalanced by traditions: the human factor, the 'savoir faire' in the vineyard and in the cellar, the tricks of the trade of the trifulau, those that  they will never reveal and whose allure they will always keep intact. As always, we bring the 'Top Piedmont Bubbles' to pair up with a great Langa menu: we will do it as Official Sparkling Wine during all the Foodies Moments of the Fair, alongside the cuisine of the great chefs of Langhe, Monferrato and Roero and of Italy".

To close the evening, before the final toast, the coaching show by Walter Rolfo, author and TV anchor, illusionist and writer, and the presentation of the video art work "Anotherview No 19 - The Penultimate Supper/The Langhe Supper", a permanent installation that will enhance the relevance of the Roddi Castle, created by the artistic collective Anotherview. And just as the "digital nomadic window" opens onto the world, in the same way - at the stroke of midnight - from the Castle the window that officially opened the season of the Alba White Truffle opened up on the hills of the Langhe and all of Piedmont, with the departure of trifulau and tabui in the moonlight.
