Mon-K talks about protecting data and sources for journalism at IJF17

Mon-k, a tech scaleup based in London and Milan, is organizing a panel discussion titled “Protecting data and sources in the era of cyber attacks: the digital tools that are available to journalists” at the International Journalism Festival of Perugia, at 6:00 pm on Saturday, April 8th.

The panel discussion will focus on the digital risks concerning journalists, the information that they’re working on and their sources, and also on the tools and best practices for minimizing them.

During IJF17, Mon-K will also present Secure-K, a USB device featuring military-grade encryption that transforms any PCs into your own computer, without leaving traces, while offering a software suite that includes Tor and an encrypted mailbox and messaging services.

Milan, April 8th, 2016 - In the era of data journalism, whistleblowing and cyber attacks, the data and sources that allow journalists to carry out their work neatly and credibly require special digital protection.

To address the issue, Mon-K, a tech scaleup based in London and Milan, is organizing a panel discussion titled “Protecting data and sources in the era of cyber attacks: the digital tools that are available to journalists” at the XI edition of the International Journalism Festival of Perugia (April 5th-9th).

The event will be held on April 8th, at 6:00 pm, at the G. Alessi Services Center in Via Mazzini 9 in Perugia and will offer an overview of the digital tools and strategies that are currently available for protecting data and sources within the war journalism and the investigative investigative journalism fields, in a historical context where solutions for protecting ourselves from privacy violations - encryption in particular - are increasingly necessary.

During the panel discussion, Daniele Raineri, a reporter for Il Foglio in Iraq, Siria and Yemen, will talk about his experience in managing data and sources in areas of conflict in the context of war journalism. Fabio Chiusi, a freelance journalist (Repubblica, L'Espresso, Wired) and blogger (Chiusi nella Rete, ilNichilista) will talk about how we’re tracked online and about the risks and solutions related to investigations and protecting information.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Marco Viviani, a freelance journalist who has written for Webnews.it about Italy’s Webtax, Cookie Law, SPID, Datagate and Italy’s political proposals for regulating the Web.

Afterwards, at 7:00 pm, the discussion will continue with an aperitif at the DOT Bar, in Via Nicola Danzetta 22, about 100 meters from the Alessi Center.

During the aperitif on Saturday, April 8th, and during IJF17, the spokespeople of Mon-K will be available to demonstrate a solution created especially for professionals who manage sensitive information while on the move: Secure-K Personal is a USB device that turns any PC, from the ones available in an internet cafe to the one used by your son, into your own company computer, safely and without leaving a trace on the PC you’re using.

The way it works is simple: you just need to insert the stick into the USB port of any personal computer, even if it’s obsolete, and enter your PIN code (8 to 15 digits) to unlock the device and boot the operating system Secure-K OS.

Secure-K OS will use the PC simply as a hardware to start from: the operating system launched by K-Secure OS and the environment on the computer are mutually isolated and Secure K-OS doesn’t leave any traces that it’s been used on the PC (Zero Footprint).

In addition, in case of theft or loss, the protection of your data and privacy are complied with because K-Secure Enterprise features:

  • a PIN code (8 to 15 digits) for unlocking the device and booting it;
  • two levels of military-type security with AES 256-bit hardware encryption and AES 512-bit software encryption that can’t be disabled by the user;
  • anti-tamper technology to prevent reverse engineering;
  • erasure of data after 10 incorrect attempts to unlock the system with a PIN code.

All the data saved on Secure-K is synchronized and shared in a simple, reliable and secure way thanks to DigitalArx, a cloud infrastructure through which you can share and access information from all desktop and mobile devices.

In addition, to facilitate the management of confidential data, K-Secure OS features a Tor browser and encrypted communication services - from email to instant messaging.
