BIOGRAPHY
Florian Bachmeier (b. 1974) is a documentary photographer from Tegernsee, Germany, specializing in visual storytelling across Eastern Europe. His photography explores themes of historical memory, identity, and resilience, capturing the social and cultural complexities of his subjects.
Bachmeier graduated in photography in Pamplona, Spain, and in modern and contemporary history from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Later, he began working as a freelance photographer and is currently represented by the Berlin-based agency N-Ost, which focuses on reporting from Eastern Europe, as well as the gallery Buchkunst Berlin.
His work has been featured in numerous national and international publications, including Die Zeit, Der Spiegel, The Times, Profil, Die Tageswoche, 11 Freunde, and Salzburger Nachrichten.
In recent years, he has undertaken a long-term project on the countries surrounding the Black Sea, documenting the region’s layered histories and current realities of this region. His work has led him to the remote landscapes of the Danube Delta in Romania and Ukraine, where he examines the intersection of nature, culture, and the challenges of modern life.
PHOTO: Beyond the Trenches
Ongoing conflict in their home village near Kupiansk (a frontline city in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine) forced Anhelina’s family to seek refuge. She now lives with her grandmother, Larisa, in Borshchivka, 95 kilometers from Kupiansk, while her mother lives and works in Kharkiv, about an hour’s journey away. The photographer wished to shed light on children who have grown up surrounded by violence, their innocence fractured but their spirit enduring as they adapt to a new life.
