Over a hundred activists from the Green Youth Movement and Extinction Rebellion Denmark are traveling to Norway from August 16–23 to protest against the Norwegian oil industry. They are part of the Nordic Climate Justice Coalition, an alliance of Nordic climate movements that includes, among others, the well-known Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who is also present in Norway. The protests take place just weeks before the parliamentary election on September 8, where Norway’s climate course for the coming years will be decided.
No plan for phase-out
Norway is Europe’s largest producer of oil and gas, yet a phase-out plan is not on the agenda ahead of the Norwegian election—a fact that is incomprehensible to Elise Sydendal, activist in the Green Youth Movement:
“Fossil fuels are accelerating climate collapse, which is already killing and displacing people. Continuing to extract fossil fuels is catastrophic when all climate science says it is directly opposed to a just and safe future.” She explains that, in addition to Nordic activists, participants have also come from countries such as Italy, Germany, France, and England: “We have come from all over Europe, because climate collapse knows no borders.”
Climate movement across the Nordics
The coming days, several hundred activists have gathered in Western Norway. The series of actions is organized by the Nordic Climate Justice Coalition, a newly formed alliance of climate activists across the Nordic region. The alliance’s stated purpose is “to dismantle the myth of the Nordic countries as green and progressive and expose their climate injustice—while demanding and supporting systems that prioritize a just transition.”
According to the alliance, it is unprecedented for so many climate activists from across the Nordics to gather in protest against the Norwegian oil industry.
“We are gathering an historic number of people in Norway to fight against the Norwegian oil state and to insist on everyone’s right to security and freedom in a world without fossil fuels. It is deeply hypocritical that the Norwegian state both pretends to be a green frontrunner and at the same time keeps expanding its oil production,” says Emil Bejer-Pedersen, activist in the Green Youth Movement.
The activists will be in Western Norway to protest against oil extraction before moving on to Oslo with the demand for a phase-out plan.
