(Parma, May 7th, 2024) - Ministers Adolfo Urso, responsible for Enterprises and Made in Italy, and Francesco Lollobrigida, overseeing Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forests, attended the opening ceremony of the 22nd edition of Cibus at Fiere di Parma, taking place from May 7th to 10th. Italian government representatives cut the ribbon at this leading event for Made in Italy agrifood after participating in the opening conference titled 'International Competition in the Agro-Food Sector.'

“Made in Italy,” Minister Adolfo Urso stated, “is synonymous worldwide with quality products and excellence. Italy is a top player in the global production scene. The Italian Food Valley is a true model of excellence, representing all the values that make Made in Italy great worldwide. The international food exhibition Cibus Parma is truly returning today after a very difficult period because of the pandemic. I am delighted to be here to meet several public administrators, but above all the companies, the true actors of the economic landscape. Our country is driven by companies and individuals who authentically represent the values of our industrial system; our industry has always been able to launch products with a natural vocation for internationalization, since they are all considered beautiful, very good, and well-made. This is the reason Italy is a top player on the global scene, thanks to food.”

During the morning, the results of research conducted by CERSI (the Research Center for Entrepreneurial Development of the University of Cattolica del Sacro Cuore) in collaboration with Fiere di Parma were showcased. The study highlights Italian growth from 2013 to 2023, reaching +27%, compared to the European average of +12%. Food product exports reached nearly $64 billion, approximately 10% of European exports ($679 billion), positioning Italy fourth in 2023 for export development in Europe. These are some of the main conclusions presented at Cibus during the inaugural conference on 'International Competition in the Agrifood Sector,' running until May 10th.

"As we can see from these data, in a macroeconomic context and a timeframe characterized by great uncertainty on several fronts, Italian companies in the agri-food sector have shown great adaptability to changes, proving to be able to sustain and develop their competitiveness in international markets more than has happened in other European countries," Fabio Antoldi, Professor of Business Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the University of Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and Director of CERSI, stated.

"As also shown by the report," Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forests Francesco Lollobrigida said, "our country, thanks to the commitment of the Government and the hard work of our farmers, producers, and entrepreneurs, is showing encouraging signs of growth. Italy confirms its excellence and success in foreign markets. An extraordinary result that highlights the quality of Made in Italy products, the solidity of our entrepreneurial fabric, and our ability to collaborate to conquer global markets. Italy is a great nation, and these data only confirm it: we are a quality superpower."

The Research

The study analyses in a comparative perspective Italian exports of products on international markets, spanning a period of ten years (2013-2022, sometimes even 2023, if available). It aims to highlight the structural evolution of our country's performance. It is based on data on world exports of food products obtained from the INTRACEN.org database (International Trade Center), the multilateral international agency operating jointly by the World Trade Organization and the United Nations (UN Trade and Development). INTRACEN aims to provide updated statistics on global trade, imports and exports, for a total list of 5,300 products (sorted by product categories and groups) whose trade is recorded in 220 countries and territories.

The INTRACEN dataset adopts a product encoding system partly different from what we are used to with Istat or Eurostat. All products are defined according to the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (HS Convention). This is an internationally standardized system of labels and numbers that classifies traded products using codes with three levels of 2, 4, or 6 numbers.

In the analysis, we have included only products belonging to 18 categories of "food and beverage" for human consumption (see following table).
