Assam, 23 November 2023 – SMILY Academy, an acronym for Sustainable Mindset and Inner Level for Youth, is the world's first impact accelerator, founded by indigenous peoples and in particular by The Forest Man Foundation and the NGO of the World Forum of Indigenous Peoples on Climate Justice.

Smily Academy is selecting 40 future entrepreneurs under 30 who will travel to Assam, India, from 20th to 26th March 2024, as guests of The Forest Man Foundation, to gain experience in co-designing businesses in the field. In this "Smily Experience" we will work on 3 challenges:

  • Drought
  • Floods
  • Women empowerment.

The Smily Experience is open to young people from all over the world, who will have until December 12, 2023, the last day of COP28 in Dubai, to register. This is the form.

It is a unique experience, because it takes place in the iconic places of world biodiversity and is hosted by the populations that protect 85% of the world's biodiversity: indigenous peoples.

In the Eastern Himalayan region of northeastern India live about 100 indigenous communities, while Assam has more than 30 tribes with over 5 million people. The total number of indigenous peoples and local communities (UN IPLC constituency) exceeds 20 million people in Assam.

The program of the experience consists of a week of joint projects direct in the field, divided into 4 phases - the 4 S's of Smily : reconnection with oneself (Soul); with others (Society); with the Planet (Soil) and with the joy of living and sharing (Smile: scale up and celebration).

The initiative will be hosted by the Indian state of Assam, iconic for its more than 100 species of medicinal plants and its biodiversity, one of the most flourishing and unspoilt in the world. In fact, here you will find Kaziranga, one of the most biologically rich natural parks on the planet, and Jorhat, the place where The Forest Man of India, founder of the NGO on Climate Justice, lives: the one who planted a jungle the size of 13 football fields.

The goal is to create sustainable young businesses. The concept of sustainability, however, starts with 3 innovations that are now indispensable:

  • From the fourth dimension: mindset, inner dimension, consciousness.
  • From the idea that without indigenous peoples, custodians of the world's biodiversity, no significant impact can be created.
  • From the need for sustainability to also be a business.

Indigenous people are thus responding to the challenges of the climate crisis.

The accelerator is scalable: each participant will train another 40, in order to multiply the sustainable companies with a strong technological vocation, which will be generated.

To ensure the implementation of climate solutions in Italy, to be implemented in the forests of emerging countries, The Forest Man of India opened a crowdfunding campaign during the Fortune Summit to raise the first 100 thousand dollars that will be multiplied thanks to the creation of businesses.

SMILY Academy is a program, conceived and founded by Claudia Laricchia, Matteo Salerno, Rituraj Phukan, Jadav Molai and Munmuni Payeng, which unites the Western and indigenous worlds around shared values of a sustainable future and co-design of regenerative models of development around a new human consciousness.

"I have decided, together with Rituraj Phukan,” says The Forest Man of India, Jadav Molai Payeng, “to entrust Claudia Laricchia with the leadership of the international strategic cooperation of the hundreds of thousands of indigenous peoples we represent, over 20 million people in Assam alone, as a clear sign of complete trust and full support for our Smily Academy,   The first indigenous impact accelerator. No one before had overturned the paradigms of relations between us indigenous people and the Western world with such contagious strength and professionalism, breaking away from the clinging inspirational narratives and a history that will certainly not be forgotten and concretely achieving altogether, the change that humanity now needs.

"SMILY Academy is a pioneering and scalable project – explains Rituraj Phukan, director of SMILY Academy India – Italy has been, with Claudia and Matteo, the creative engine of an accelerator that we co-founded and that I am sure will continue to scale until it becomes the rule – where the sacredness of life on the planet is no longer at risk, with prioritised extractive models designed exclusively on one of the 4 dimensions of sustainability. The future now is Smily."

For Italy, Rituraj Phukan has appointed two ambassadors, Andrea Grieco and Federica Vinci (Obama leader), who will collaborate with Nick Difino, contact person for food innovation; Potito Ruggiero, contact person for GenZ and Roberta Bonacossa, coordinator of the training process for youth companies.

The accelerator has 3 branches in emerging countries, Brazil in the Amazon Rainforest; Ghana, Africa; Assam, India.

On November 22nd from the stage of the Fortune Summit, in Rome, on the theme "One Health", the co-founder and President of Smily Academy, Claudia Laricchia for the first timepresented the fourth branch: Smily Academy Italia, which will open the first week of December in Milan, at Dot Academy, a benefit company, at Spazio78.

Italy has a vertical focus on agricultural and agri-food systems and on the disasters that the regions are facing, from floods to hydrogeological instability. It is in the Italian territories under crisis that the solutions developed in the course of international experiences will be implemented.
