MEDTEC Europe Start-up Academy award to Liquidweb
The Start-up Academy Medtec Europe 2015 award was assigned to Liquidweb, last April 23 in Stuttgart.
The startup, present at Medtec Europe, international exhibition of medical devices in Europe, after the victory of the Medtec Italy Start-up Academy last October, was also awarded at international level for its innovative assistive technology Braincontrol that allow patients in "locked-in" state to communicate.
Braincontrol works like a “mental joystick” (based on brain-computer interface technology, BCI), allowing people suffering from pathologies such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Multiple Sclerosis, tetraplegia and various kinds of muscular dystrophies, to overcome severe physical and communicative disabilities. In particular, Braincontrol can help patients suffering from diseases that paralyze the whole body or parts of the body, but who retain their intellectual abilities.
The first version of Braincontrol is commercially available and it has already obtained the CE certification such as class I medical device. This solution fills a technological void for patients who are cognitively aware, but completely unable to move or communicate even with eye-tracking systems.
Future versions of Braincontrol, which are currently under development, will include advanced communication and entertainment (virtual keyboard, text-to-speech, web browsing, interaction via sms, social networks, email, web-radio), home automation (lights, alarms, temperature, etc.), the control of a wheelchair, humanoid robot and exoskeletons.
