UNIDO ITPO Italy organized a webinar to foster the dairy and livestock sectors in Pakistan
Rome, 22 June 2020 – UNIDO ITPO Italy, in collaboration with the Pakistani Embassy in Rome and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA), organized the “Webinar on Dairy and Livestock Sectors of Pakistan” on 22 June 2020 with the goal of highlighting business opportunities and investments by Italian SMEs aimed at enhancing the Pakistani dairy and livestock industry.
In compliance with the current measures to limit the Covid-19 from spreading even further, the event took place on a virtual platform, gathering more than 50 online participants from prominent institutions, enterprises, universities, associations and other relevant stakeholders in the field. Notably, the webinar featured the participation and remarks of the Ambassador of Pakistan to Italy, H.E. Mr. Jauhar Saleem, the Ambassador of Italy to Pakistan, H.E. Mr. Andreas Ferrarese, and the Director of AICS in Islamabad, Mrs. Emanuela Benini, stressing the pivotal role of the livestock and dairy sectors within the country’s economy and the importance of institutional and commercial partnerships to boost the Pakistani industry.
During her opening remarks, the Head of UNIDO ITPO Italy, Ms. Diana Battaggia commented: “In order to enhance sustainable industrial productivity in Developing Countries towards the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals, we need to mobilize business investments, new technologies and managerial know-how. In this sense, our Italian enterprises can offer the best innovations in a wide range of sectors and match the needs of Pakistani companies”.
Throughout the multi-panel discussion, the Punjab Board of Investment & Trade (PBIT) highlighted incentives of provincial and federal governments for foreign investors; the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Lahore (UVAS) focused on investment opportunities within Pakistani livestock and dairy sectors; and the Pakistani Dairy Association (PDA) introduced local conditions, dynamics and key players so as to facilitate the access to the Pakistani market. Italian companies Teknoice and Comat also presented their innovative technologies and solutions to Pakistani counterparts for milk processing and multiple dairy products and derivates – machineries for the production and processing of ice cream and cheese, respectively – in the framework of sustainable industrial development.
The Pakistani panellists stressed how the local demand for livestock products and processed foods is steadily increasing, due to the raising awareness of enhanced nutrition and to the country’s economic development, with higher per capita income and yet a significant gap between demand and growth rate in the dairy industry. To improve the current market situation, the webinar illustrated how the already-existing systems in Pakistan for milk processing can be integrated with cutting-edge technologies and efficient techniques from abroad through the technology transfer and the business investments by experienced Italian enterprises in the field.
Featuring the insightful interventions of many relevant institutions, companies and associations, the webinar succeeded in advancing cooperation between Pakistan and Italy by providing a platform for the exchange of technological know-how and successful best practices within the dairy and livestock sectors.
Insights
As a result, currently there are already 3 ongoing negotiations between Italian and Pakistani companies operating within dairy and livestock sectors, in order to supply innovative technologies, bio products and safety protocols aimed to reduce the transmission of antibiotic resistance.
This webinar was part of the several promotional activities successfully carried out by ITPO Italy under the framework of the SMEDA-Italy Programme – including round tables, company visits, study tours and participation in trade fairs supporting Pakistani delegations from institutions and the private sector – to advance trade partnerships between Italy and Pakistan by providing a platform for the exchange of technological know-how and successful best practices.
Pakistan ranks among the top five milk producing countries in the world, and the local dairy and livestock industry strongly contributes to the national GDP. More importantly, these strategic sectors can play a crucial role in fostering the economic recovery and growth in Pakistan after the Covid-19 crisis.
