Boosting the Fishery Sector in Somalia: UNIDO’s webinar at Sealogy

Organized by Sealogy – the European Exhibition on Blue Economy –  in collaboration with UNIDO in the framework of the Sealogy Digital Preview, the Blue Webinar “Development of sustainable fisheries in Somalia” took place on 19 November, advancing business cooperation and technological innovation for sustainable industrial development in the fishery sector of Somalia.

The online conference was moderated by UNIDO ITPO Italy Investment Promotion Expert Mr. Francesco Pallocca, and featured the participation of prominent local institutions and international organizations, illustrating current market trends and highlighting existing opportunities in the field. Panelists included Mr. Ygor Scarcia, Industrial Development Expert and UNIDO Representative to Somalia; Mr. Guglielmo Giordano, Head of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) Mogadishu Office; Mr. Abdiaziz Ibrahim Adan, Director General of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of FGS; Mr. Abdullahi Ahmed Addow, Director of Department of Planning at the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Resources (MoFMR); and Prof. Isse Halane, Deputy Director General at the Somali Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI).

The second session of the conference was then dedicated to the presentations delivered by four selected Somali small and medium enterprises – Jubaland Ocean Resources Enterprise (JORE), Al-khayrat Fishing Company, Sahan Seafood Company, and Billan Fishing Company – who had the opportunity to actively join the panel and promote their business in the fisheries, looking for partnerships in field of boat construction, fishing tools, cold storage and fish processing. 

Fostering trade partnerships and technology transfer for sustainable development in the local industry, the webinar took place during the Sealogy Digital Preview, held online from 19 to 22 November 2020, and in the framework of the project “Agro-Technology Development for Economic Growth in South and Central Somalia”, funded by AICS and implemented by UNIDO.
